Southern Croatia

Dubrovnik

A compact historic city with famous walls, sea views and useful bus and seasonal ferry links.

Why go

Why visit Dubrovnik?

Dubrovnik is worth a few nights if you want a memorable old city and dramatic coastal views. Staying longer than a quick day visit also lets you see the center early or later, when it often feels calmer.

Without a car

Getting there without a car

Dubrovnik is connected with other Croatian cities by long-distance bus. It also has an airport outside the city. Airport buses and local transport can take you into Dubrovnik without a car.

For long-distance buses, check Arriva Croatia, FlixBus or GetByBus. Seasonal passenger ferries can connect Dubrovnik with islands and Split; check Jadrolinija and TP Line.

Always check the exact station, port and travel date before booking.

Keep it practical

Where to stay

Choose an area that keeps your daily travel simple.

Old Town

Best for atmosphere and easy sightseeing. There are many steps, and cars do not enter the historic core.

Pile

Very practical for first-time visitors. It is just outside the walls and close to many local bus stops.

Lapad

A calmer area with hotels, restaurants and beaches. Local buses connect it with the old city.

Gruž

Useful if you want to be near the main bus station and ferry port. Take a local bus to the old city.

Add one easy day

Easy day trips

Pick one that fits your pace and the transport on your date.

Lokrum

A very easy boat outing from Dubrovnik when services are operating.

Cavtat

A relaxed seaside town south of Dubrovnik, reached by local transport or seasonal boat.

Elafiti Islands

A popular boat day with small island stops.

Mostar or Montenegro

Common longer guided day trips. Check border requirements and expect a full day.

November to March

Visiting in winter

Dubrovnik in winter

Dubrovnik is calmer in winter and the Old Town is easier to explore without summer crowds. Some seasonal businesses and boat trips may close or reduce hours. Bus links remain useful, but coastal ferry choices are more limited outside the main season. Check current opening hours and transport for your dates.
