Island stop

Korčula

Korčula offers a compact walled old town, sea views and a quieter island stay between larger coastal cities.

Why go

Why visit Korčula?

Korčula Town sits on a small peninsula with lanes arranged in a fishbone pattern and sea on three sides. It is quieter than Hvar and works well for two or three nights between Split and Dubrovnik.

There are steps into the old town, while the seafront path around the walls is flat. The island also suits travellers interested in local wine villages such as Lumbarda.

Highlights

  • St. Mark's Cathedral stands on its main old-town square.
  • The Land Gate and old town towers frame the historic centre.
  • A small museum occupies the house said to be Marco Polo's birthplace, although his birthplace is not known for certain.
  • The seafront walk around the old town walls is well suited to sunset.
  • Lumbarda is one of the island's wine villages and is known for Grk white wine.

When to go

Best time to visit

Late May, June and September bring warm sea and fewer people. July and August are the busiest months.

Korčula in winter

Winter is very quiet. Ferry and catamaran connections are reduced, many hotels and restaurants close, and some sights keep shorter hours, so check transport for your exact date.

Bus, ferry and on foot

Getting there

Korčula has no bridge to the mainland, so visitors arrive by sea. Passenger catamarans by Jadrolinija and Krilo link Korčula Town with Split, Hvar and Dubrovnik, mostly in the warmer months. Car ferries also cross from Orebić on the Pelješac peninsula, and some routes are seasonal.
