Istria

Pula

Pula combines Roman landmarks, a working harbour city and straightforward day trips around Istria.

Why go

Why visit Pula?

Pula suits travellers who like history they can reach on foot. The Arena, Forum, Temple of Augustus and Arch of the Sergii are all part of the city itself rather than a separate resort area.

It is also a practical base for Brijuni boat trips and wider Istria day trips. The city stays lively through the year, which can suit visitors travelling outside summer.

A good first choice is the Roman heritage walk with a local guide. It meets at the Arena, in the morning or afternoon.

First visit

Highlights

  • The Arena is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres and stands close to the harbour.
  • The Forum and Temple of Augustus sit at the heart of the old town.
  • The Arch of the Sergii marks a Roman entrance into the old streets.
  • The Venetian fortress, Kaštel, stands on the hill with views over the town and harbour.
  • Brijuni National Park lies just off the coast and is reached by boat.

When to go

Best time to visit

Late spring and early autumn bring warm weather with fewer crowds than July and August. Summer is hotter and busier, with concerts and events in the Arena.

Pula in winter

Pula is quieter in winter but remains open because people live and work here all year. Some boat trips and seasonal restaurants close, and there are fewer boats to Brijuni, so check opening times before planning.

Bus, ferry and on foot

Getting there

Long-distance buses connect Pula with Zagreb, Rijeka and other Istrian towns, including services by Arriva Croatia. The bus station is a short walk from the Arena and old town. The old centre is best explored on foot, while Pulapromet buses serve beaches and outer districts.
