Rovinj

Rovinj is a compact seaside town for slow walks, harbour time and a few relaxed nights.

Why go

Why visit Rovinj?

Rovinj's old town sits on a rounded peninsula below St. Euphemia's bell tower. It is smaller and quieter than Pula, and works well for two or three relaxed nights.

The lanes are cobbled and sloping, so good shoes help. Travellers who enjoy wandering rather than rushing between sights will feel at home in Rovinj.

Highlights

  • St. Euphemia's Church stands at the top of the old town with views over the town and islands.
  • Grisia is a steep lane lined with small galleries.
  • The harbour and Batana House introduce Rovinj's traditional wooden boats.
  • A seaside path leads towards Golden Cape forest park, Zlatni rt.
  • In summer, short boat rides run to nearby islands such as St. Catherine or Red Island.

When to go

Best time to visit

May, June and September are pleasant and calmer than peak summer. July and August are hotter and busier.

Rovinj in winter

Winter is very quiet. Many hotels, restaurants and boat trips close roughly from November to March, although some cafés and places to stay remain open, so check before booking.

Bus, ferry and on foot

Getting there

Buses connect Rovinj with Pula, Rijeka, Zagreb and other Istrian towns, including Arriva Croatia services. The bus station is a short walk from the old town. The old town itself is pedestrianised, so you walk in from its edge.

Good to know

Short tips

  • The old town has the most atmosphere but also more steps and cobbles.
  • Staying just outside on the harbour or bus-station side is flatter and still close.
