Northern Dalmatia

Zadar

Zadar pairs a walkable old town with seafront evenings, island boats and convenient day trips.

Why go

Why visit Zadar?

Zadar is a real city by the sea with an old town on a mostly flat peninsula. The main sights sit close together and there are few hills.

It also works well as a base for Krka, Plitvice and island boat trips. In the evening, many people walk along the seafront to the Sea Organ.

  • The Roman Forum and the round Church of St. Donatus stand in the old town.
  • The Sea Organ makes sounds from the waves beside the Greeting to the Sun installation.

  • The Land Gate is the old Venetian entrance to the town.
  • Barkajoli are local rowing boatmen who ferry people across the harbour.

When to go

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn are pleasant for walking. The sea is warm enough to swim from June to September, while July and August are the busiest months.

Zadar in winter

Zadar remains lively in winter because people live here year-round. Advent in Zadar runs from 24 November 2026 to 2 January 2027, with concerts, food and an ice rink around the Old Town, Petar Zoranić Square, the City Market and the Forum. Some island ferries run less often in winter.

Bus, ferry and on foot

Getting there

Long-distance buses connect Zadar with Zagreb, Split and many other towns. The main bus station is outside the old town; Liburnija buses link it with the centre, or you can walk farther into town. Jadrolinija runs island ferries and catamarans, and it is worth checking which port your boat uses.
